In his conversation with Moczarski in the Warsaw prison while awaiting his trial, he recounts this battle:

Already during the first two days of the Grossaktion the numerically strongest Jewish combat-unit included Polish ‘franctireurs.’ They withdrew in the direction of Muranowski Square where it was sizably reinforced by Aryans. The Jews maintained constant contact with the AK…. At Muranowski Square it came to a fierce battle…. Our intelligence had reported for some time that the AK already on the day that the ghetto was established, began setting up various resistance points, delivering weapons and instructions, and teaching the Jews streetfighting, engineer operations, the manufacture of explosives, grenades, etc. As visual proof of these facts, the Jewish rebels raised on a high building next to the Jewish white-blue flag also the white-red Polish flag. These flags were the signal to fight against us Germans.39
